Magical Reality: Author Interview - Gabriella Balcom

Image
Purchase on Amazon Today we are talking with the author of “What I Miss the Most”, Gabriella Balcom. What was your inspiration for this story? I think many people have been in unhappy relationships. While numerous problems can occur, a common one learning that one's partner has been deceitful on some way—maybe even unfaithful. People often think about their lives and regret having invested time in this person or that one, making certain choices, or wish they could turn back time. We all have regrets of one kind or another, I believe. One day I thought about the unhappiness one of my relatives experienced, and how he wished he'd done things differently. This led me straight into "What I Miss the Most." Who is your favorite character in your story and why? I deeply sympathize with my main character and her pain. However, I'm also partial to a certain dark figure because of what his coming represents. I admire him for not taking advantage, an...

Magical Reality Author Interview - Pyra Kane

Image
Buy now on Amazon Today we are talking with the author of “Submerged Revive”, Pyra Kane. What was your inspiration for this story? It was as simple as the thought popping into my head. Mermaids and soul-collecting are two interesting concepts. So I slapped them together, and started writing. Although the characters in my story aren’t exactly mermaids, that’s easily what they’re based off of. Who is your favorite character in your story and why? Can my answer be ‘all of them?’ No? Okay, if I had to choose one, it’d probably be Ceru, Chartreuse’s older brother. He was a fun guy to write for, and it’s so endearing how much he cares for Charteuse. What is your writing process like? It’s not much of a set process. My new job has kept me busy most of the time, so whenever I can, I try to sit down and write however many words I can manage. Is fantasy the genre you usually write in? I’m more of a multi-genre author. Some of my planned works are fantas...

Magical Reality: Author Interview - Mercedes Siler

Image
Buy now on Amazon Today we are talking with the author of “Somebody Else”, Mercedes Siler. What was your inspiration for this story?  I was in the car ruminating on if I COULD actually write a Modern Fantasy story when the song “Somebody Else” by 1975 came on and I started analyzing the lyrics. I had a book cover by another author in my mind, of a lithe young man covered in paint, and I imagined, with the sounds of the song, that the paint colors were soft pink, gray, and light aqua, like the bowls I just got at Target. With those colors, the sound and story of the song, I got the idea of Jax’s story. Who is your favorite character in your story and why?  Oooh. I don’t know. I always have soft spots for my characters. But I’ll say Kevin. He’s a sweetie and he has nothing but love for Jax. Do you have a favorite story in Magical Reality? If so, why is it your favorite? (If you haven’t read them all yet and choose not to answer, that’s more than fine. If l...

Souls Discovered by Miranda Brock: Book Review

Image
Souls Discovered by Miranda Brock My rating: 4 of 5 stars Good golly miss molly and oh, my heart! I-I-I just— I need a moment. Excuse me, please. Wow, okay, so this one hit me right in the feels. Can I say masterful foreshadowing? Dang! I should probably back up a bit. I had no idea how this book would go. The beginning was a little jumbled for me (I think to reflect on how jumbled it was for Autumn, the main character). It took me a moment to sort out the narrative. I've been reading a lot of first-person lately and Souls Discovered is told in third-omniscient, so it took me a few chapters to get into the groove of things. That's not to say it I didn't like it (I don't finish books I don't like, and therefore don't review them!) it just took my little brain some time to adjust. About a quarter of a way in, I got into the groove, and I fell in love. This was a completely new type of urban fantasy, with its own mythos. How Ms. Brock juggled 8 major...

Magical Reality: Author Interview- Jensen Reed

Image
Preorder on Amazon! Today we are talking with the author of “Heir”, Jensen Reed. What was your inspiration for this story?  I responded to a prompt in Writing Bad. It was a photo I found by Stefan Koidl that pictured a little boat above dragon bones in water. I wrote basically the opening paragraph as the prompt response and once we decided to do this theme for the anthology I knew it would fit perfectly! Who is your favorite character in your story and why?  I really love Jo. She has such a strong personality and I love her quirks. I also love how much Lincoln loves her. Do you have a favorite story in Magical Reality? If so, why is it your favorite? I absolutely adore “Misspelled” by Olivia London AND Melissa Sell’s “Mall of Magic”. They are both exactly the type of story I had in mind with this theme. What is your writing process like?  Be inspired, write out the scene that comes to mind, meet the characters, build their back stories, write, re...

Magical Reality Tour: Author Interview-James Pyles

Image
Order on Amazon! Today we are talking with the author of “The Dragon’s Family”, James Pyles. What was your inspiration for this story?   Roughly two-and-a-half years ago, I wrote a story for my then seven-year-old grandson Landon called “The Day a Dragon Came to Live with Us” based on games we used to play together. Landon would create a situation for us to play in, we’d imagine who our characters would be, and then we’d act everything out. I thought it would be fun to use some of our games as the basis for a story to publish on my blog, and from there, it took on a life of its own, becoming hundreds of stories. When the opportunity came along for me to submit a tale to “Magical Realities,” I thought with a lot of editing, the very first story would be a good fit. When I told Landon, who has just turned ten, about it being published in “Magical Reality” he was thrilled. Who is your favorite character in your story and why ?   Probably both the Grandpa and the ...
