Magical Reality: Author Interview - Mercedes Siler
Today we are talking with the author of “Somebody Else”, Mercedes Siler.
What was your inspiration for this story?
I was in the car ruminating on if I COULD actually write a Modern Fantasy story when the song “Somebody Else” by 1975 came on and I started analyzing the lyrics. I had a book cover by another author in my mind, of a lithe young man covered in paint, and I imagined, with the sounds of the song, that the paint colors were soft pink, gray, and light aqua, like the bowls I just got at Target. With those colors, the sound and story of the song, I got the idea of Jax’s story.
Who is your favorite character in your story and why?
Oooh. I don’t know. I always have soft spots for my characters. But I’ll say Kevin. He’s a sweetie and he has nothing but love for Jax.
Do you have a favorite story in Magical Reality? If so, why is it your favorite? (If you haven’t read them all yet and choose not to answer, that’s more than fine. If less than half answers, we won’t share. If you don’t answer, we won’t share on your interview.)
I haven’t read all of them yet, but I did read the ones surrounding mine and they were both good, so I imagine I will love all of them.
What is your writing process like?
Procrastination, procrastination, inspiration, single-minded focus, procrastination, procrastination….
Is fantasy the genre you usually write in? No! Never. But now I have been kind of bit by the bug and keep thinking of more. I usually write New Adult fiction and romance.
How long on average does it take you to write a story?
A short story like this? One to three days, maybe. Then two for editing. A longer short story, maybe two weeks. A novel, who knows. They vary. One it took two months, another six weeks, another a year.
How important was research to you when writing this story?
Research is the funnest part, so super important.
Are there any books that you are currently reading and why?
I do a lot of beta reading and critique reading, so my reading for pleasure time comes and goes. The last book I picked up and super enjoyed was one by Piper Lennox, another New Adult romance writer.
What are you writing now or what are you planning on writing next?
I am dragging my feet writing a climate fiction. Wish me luck, perseverance, and mental fortitude.
Do you have any upcoming releases?
I have a YA that needs editing. I’m hoping that will be done and releasable this spring.
Where can we find you?
