Wings of the Wicked: Interview Featuring Zachary Copchinski

I love doing author interviews, so when Zach put out the word that he needed to do a few to gain more exposure for the box set he's part of, I was all about it. I've read a few of his book and have loved every word! 

Zach brings some awesome characters to life and creates brilliant worlds for them to live in and explore. In the case of his Hall of Doors series, each book is set in a brand new world! Webley and the World Machine is steampunk, Kip and the Grinders is cyberpunk (technopunk?), and his contribution to the Wings of the Wicked box set, Arija and the Burning City, is urban fantasy! So without further ado, here's my interview with Zachary Paul Chopchinski:

Q: Do you have a writing ritual to get you into the zone, or do you dive right in?

A: Caffeine and music. If I don’t have both of those then I just can’t write.

Q: If you could live in the Hall of Doors world (or Gabriella's!) would you? What kind of role would you have?

A: Oh Hell yeah! I would live in the Hall of Doors world and I would be a miner or mechanic. I would love to build that shit!

Q: What is your absolute favorite thing about being a writer?

A: Being able to create any world I want. The possibilities are endless.

Q: Tell us a secret...

A: I write mostly in the nude. HAHA I don’t even think I can elaborate on that one. HAHA I just usually write really early in the morning so I don’t bother to put clothes on.

Q: As a writer, what is your ultimate goal?

A: My ultimate goal is to be Ryan Reynolds’ butt double in a film. HAHA Well that and to be able to walk into a bookstore and find my book on the shelves (without me asking them to put it there).

Q: How did you get involved in the Wings of the Wicked box set?

A: I paid money. LOL No but really I saw an opportunity to get involved in the boxed set and applied for it.

Q: How long will the set be available for after its release?

A: The boxed set is currently available for pre-order on all platforms. It will be published on January 8, 2019 and it will be taken down sometime in April. Once it is taken down, I will be re-releasing my story, Arija and The Burning City. When I re-release it, it will contain the full illustrations just like the other books in the series. Q: Did you plan Arija and the Burning City specifically for the box set or did you have it brewing beforehand and it happened to fit the box set's criteria?

A: I designed this one specifically for the boxed set. But once I started writing it, I realized it was a great way to showcase how Adal and Arija handle themselves separately and it actually served as a great leeway into the next book which I had already planned out.

Q: Who is your favorite supporting character in your books?

A: Kip. I make sure that I rotate all my characters in and out of the storyline. He has become somewhat of a main character because readers really wanted to see more and more of him, but he was always my favorite supporting character.

Q: Are we going to see our favorite characters return?

A: I guess that depends on who your favorite characters are. I will say that a certain fan favorite character has become much bigger than what I intended. She’s gathered somewhat of a cult following and so I did decide to keep her around. That’s the only hint you’re getting. But you will see a few familiar faces in this book.

Q: Any new characters you're excited to share?

A: I think you get a new appreciation for some of the main characters as they are faced with even more trying situations. However, at the end of this book, I introduce a new character that I am really excited to share with you in future books.

Q: I'm still curious about Kip's biology. Is he all machine? Are parts of him human (I think I remember him eating)? How is he alive?!

A: All of the Dwellers are full machines. They eat fruits and vegetables and their inner mechanics break them down and separates them to be able to use the oils from the foods to help maintain the inner workings. Then also there is what can be considered a small furnace that breaks down the remainder of the foods to use the exothermic heat as energy. So basically their bodies work similarly to ours except theirs is mechanical and ours is organic. There is a little bit of what we call magic that also goes into making the Dwellers, but that is a secret that only Webley can tell.

(yes, that last question was a bit self-serving on my part, but I HAD to know!)
